Switch to Safer Food Storage
Since everyone’s fridge is stocked with leftovers and we are cooking at home more than ever, I am sharing my go to’s for safer food storage. First I will lay out why this matters and secondly what to switch to using.
The Why:
Hidden chemicals in plastic (yes even BPA free ones) often leach into your food, especially when heated.
These are mainly endocrine disrupting chemicals that mimic your hormones and can throw your body off. Think of hormones as little messengers that run throughout your body telling it how to work. When something interrupts this communication, it can lead to many varied negative health effects like reproductive development.
While it may be hard to control every source of plastic that we come across (take out containers, bottled water, food packaging, coffee pods, to go cups etc.) we can control what goes on in our own homes.
Making safer choices with what you can control can make a big difference in your health.
It was so much better for the environment as well since plastic never really breaks down.
What to Use:
Switch to glass, stainless steel and silicone for storing your food.
You can find glass storage at most discount stores like TJ Maxx or Ross for really affordable prices. Right now Amazon may be your best bet.
Silicone is a great option fo replacing plastic bags and covering dishes. Stasher bags are my go-to for this.
I love mixing bowls with lids for stainless steel storage because they can be used for so many things! Food storage, mixing bowls, serving bowls when entertaining and my favorite option for eating a big ole salad at home.
One switch I’ve made that makes me feel like an environmental hero is taking my own produce bags to the grocery store to bypass all those plastic bags. They are also great for storing produce in your fridge so they aren’t sitting in plastic.
Not only will you be pleasantly surprised at how little money you spend moving forward, but these options keep food fresh for way longer than plastic.
A free option is to reuse your glass jars from pasta sauces, salsas, etc.
